Reading Pleasure, Pleasure Reading: medieval approaches to reading

Summer School, 23–28 May 2016, at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul. Organised by the section for Greek and Byzantine Studies (Uppsala University) and the Centre for Me­dieval Literature (University of Southern Denmark and the University of York).

This summer school will explore discourses and strategies of reading and pleasure in the Middle Ages. From what appears to have been a primarily pious, learned, and/or legal use of reading in the early medieval period, books and texts came to be gradually and increasingly associated with notions of pleasure. On the one hand, different kinds of explicit or implicit pleasure made up literary motifs and became a literary theme; on the other, pleasure came to be thought of – at least by some – as fundamental to reading. This tendency concerns not just narrative fiction and poetry, traditionally associated with reading for pleasure, but also genres such as epistolography and historiography. And patterns turn out surprisingly similar in both Persian, Arabic, Byzantine and Western medieval environments.

Autumn School H. Pirenne Instituut, 19-23 okt 2015

Naar jaarlijkse gewoonte organiseert het H. Pirenne Instituut (Universiteit Gent) in oktober een Autumn School in samenwerking met de Nederlandse Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek. Dit jaar zullen twee themata opeenvolgend worden behandeld gedurende twee en een halve dag.

Van 19 tot 21 oktober 2015 buigt men zich over middeleeuws recht (Romeins recht, canoniek recht, costumier recht, feodaal recht, handelsrecht en iconografische bronnen in verband met rechtshandelingen). Van 21 oktober tot 23 oktober 2015 komen de middeleeuwse Germaanse talen aan bod. Niet het aanleren van een specifieke (middeleeuwse) Germaanse taal staat centraal, maar wel de communicatie tussen sprekers met een verschillende moedertaal, culturele invloeden tussen anderstalige gebieden, taalcontact en taalvariatie.

Summer school economische geschiedenis, 26-28 augustus 2015, Firenze

Van 26 t.e.m 28 augustus 2015 vindt te Firenze de 4e Summer School rond economische geschiedenis plaats. Dit jaar is het thema Les moyens de paiement aux époques médiévale et moderne. Zomeractiviteiten Grup de Recerca ‘Espai, Poder i Cultura’

Deze zomer organiseert de Grup de Recerca Consolidat en Estudis Medievals “Espai, Poder i Cultura” (Universitat de Lleida) twee conferenties. Op 29 en 30 juni 2015 vindt de Zesde studiedag van het klooster van Les Avellanes plaats, die als thema heeft ‘Creences a l’època medieval: Ortodòxia i Heretgia’. Summer School Digital Humanities, 29 juni – 10 juli 2015, Parijs

De Université Paris-Sorbonne en de École nationale des chartres organiseren een Summer school in Digital Humanities. Centraal staat het maken van wetenschappelijke uitgaves van teksten in het Latijn en Frans via digitale methodes. Extended deadline for registration Winterschool ‘Communication and Exploitation of Knowledge’

The deadline for registration for the Winterschool ‘Communication and Exploitation of Knowledge’ is extended to 10 December 2014. The School’s PhD Students are specially invited to send in an application. External PhD Students (‘buitenpromovendi’) are welcome to apply as well.

Theme

This conference is devoted to communication and knowledge in the Middle Ages and is aimed at graduate students (both Research-MA and PhD) from all relevant disciplines. Students are invited to submit an abstract for a paper relating to their current research. The theme is defined broadly so as to attract participants with diverse backgrounds. Proposals may cover such topics as transmission channels, material means of communication, manuscripts as objects, textual genres related to communication, oral versus written communication, education, the medieval understanding of (or attitude to) communication and/or knowledge, comparing practices across space or time, etc. The conference aims to be a platform where graduate students can learn about current research in medieval communication (broadly understood), practice their presentation and chairing skills, and exchange ideas with peers from another research culture.

Participants and Papers

The program allows for thirty participants: fifteen Research-MA and seven PhD students affiliated to the Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek, as well as eight PhD students from the University of Cambridge. Regarding the Research-MA students, priority will be given to those enrolled in the Graduate Programme (Special Training Programme) of the Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek. PhD students are invited to give a twenty-minute paper, while MA-students will give shorter papers of ten minutes. The conference will start at 9 am on Friday 20 February and will run to 2 pm on Sunday 22 February. Lunch and dinner will be provided at no charge. Students from the UK are offered three nights of hotel (Thursday, Friday and Saturday night); Dutch participants are expected to find their own accommodation, or make suitable travel arrangements.

Students interested in participating are requested to submit an abstract (in English) of c. 250 words (PDF) to Erik Kwakkel (Dutch students) or Rosamond McKitterick (UK students). In addition, students are asked to submit a one-page letter of motivation (PDF). Selection is based on both your letter and abstract.

Autumn School “Latin Paleography” & “Medieval Liturgy” (Gent, 20-22/10/2014)

Het Henri Pirenne Instituut (UGent) organiseert van maandag 20 t.e.m. woensdag 22 oktober 2014 twee parallelle autumn schools over Latijnse paleografie en middeleeuwse liturgie. Deze zijn specifiek bedoeld voor masterstudenten en doctorandi in de middeleeuwse studies. Men kan zich voor een van de twee onderwerpen inschrijven. Voor de cursus paleografie is een basiskennis van het Latijn vereist. In beide cursussen is het Engels de voertaal. Er worden maximaal twintig deelnemers toegelaten per cursus.
