Mediëvistendag Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek – 17 december 2021
Op vrijdag 17 december 2021 zal aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam de volgende Mediëvistendag van de Onderzoekschool Mediëvistiek plaatsvinden. Het symposium is deze keer gewijd aan REFLECTIE. Over the course of the Middle Ages and the first Renaissance, what was called the ‘Low Countries’ (BeNeLux, Northern France, Northern-Western Rhine Regions) developed an original written culture. The essential part of what has been preserved of this important heritage has fortunately survived in the libraries and manuscript collections of our regions, sometimes abroad. Over the last few years, important survey and recovery projects have been started. However, not all the heritage collections have been identified or explored, especially in the private and ecclesiastical libraries. Moreover, not all the pre-modern sources useful for the study of this written heritage have yet been identified, surveyed or edited.
To facilitate these scholarly activities, we must call on information technologies and particularly on digital humanities for inventory, research, preservation and enhancement of this heritage. Relevant technologies include managing metadata, digitization, electronic editions, data mining, virtual libraries and virtual digital museology or digitally restoring medieval books. However, all these initiatives have not yet necessarily been surveyed, and they are still not all accessible from a central point of information. Moreover, many manuscripts and the relevant sources that document their history are still poorly known to scholars working in this field.
It therefore seems timely and opportune to make an assessment of the initiatives and to establish a research community around the written heritage of the historical Low Countries and the application of digital humanities to this field. An ‘observatory of written heritage’, comparable to Biblissima and in close collaboration with this pioneering French portal in the field, would be a good approach to creating a synergy between keepers of the historical collections, expert librarians, academic scholars and teachers and digital humanities researchers.
In order to launch this contact group’s activities, a webinar has already been organized in May 2021. Now that the relaxation of the Covid-19 rules allow for in-person meetings, we are able to organize a meeting on 23rd and 24th November. This will not be a conference, but working groups deliberating on the need of such a network, the expectations for it, and the possible activities it could undertake in the next future.
If you are a librarian, an archivist, a written heritage preservation or digitization specialist, a Digital Humanities specialist, a researcher or a teacher involved in the field of written cultures of the area in question, and if you are a representative of your institution, unit, laboratory, etc., you are friendly invited to participate in the working days (there may be several participants for each institution, depending on their skills).

Last Call. Henri Pirenne Autumn School in Medieval Languages and Culture 2021 – Gent en Fordham – 18 t.e.m. 22 oktober 2021
Van 18 tot en met 22 oktober 2021 zal de Henri Pirenne Autumn School in Medieval Languages and Culture 2021 plaatsvinden aan de Universiteit Gent en de Fordham University. De vraag welke geografische en chronologische afbakeningen het meest gepast zijn om de Europese middeleeuwse geschiedenis te bestuderen, dient als uitgangspunt voor deze editie die als titel “Scales of Knowledge. From Cosmos to Book” heeft. Het twaalfde-eeuwse Liber Floridus dient als toetssteen bij het beantwoorden van die vraag.
De Autumn School wordt georganiseerd voor doctoraatsstudenten en masterstudenten en zal zowel fysiek als online plaatsvinden. Het concrete programma is in de pdf in bijlage terug te vinden. Health and Wellbeing in the Cities of the Low Countries (Later Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century) – Gezondheid en welzijn in de steden van de Nederlanden (late middeleeuwen tot 20e eeuw)
Op vrijdag 22 oktober 2021 vindt in het STAM in Gent een lezingenreeks plaats in verband met gezondheid en welzijn in steden in de Nederlanden. Het aantal deelnemers wordt beperkt tot 35. Call for Papers – Centre for Medieval Literature. Conferentie Scale(s) of Literary History – Europe c. 500-1500
Het Centre for Medieval Literature organiseert van 5 tot en met 7 april 2022 een conferentie in Rome over de ruimtelijke, chronologische en archivalische begrenzingen van de middeleeuwse Europese literatuurgeschiedenis. Het voorlopige programma is op de website van het Centre for Medieval Literature terug te vinden: https://cml.sdu.dk/news/cfp-cml-conference-scales-of-literary-history-europe-c-500-1500.
Het is nog mogelijk om voorstellen voor panels of papers bij de organisatie in te dienen. Deze voorstellen dienen verstuurd te worden tegen 1 september 2021 naar cml@sdu.dk. Voor voorstellen voor panels en papers moeten een kort abstract (250 woorden) en een cv van een halve pagina opgestuurd worden. Voorstellen voor panels moeten ook een overzicht van het panel (100 woorden) bevatten en de abstracts en cv’s van alle papers die deel zullen uitmaken van het panel. Deelname aan de conferentie is gratis maar deelnemers moeten hun eigen reis- en accommodatiekosten betalen.
Modèles, réseaux et échanges curiaux au Moyen Âge
Van 20 tot en met 23 mei vindt in Brussel het 52ste congres van de Société des Historiens Médiévistes de l’Enseignement Supérieur Public plaats. Het congres valt samen met de 43ste rencontres van het Réseau des Médiévistes belges de langue française. Het centrale thema is de relatie tussen politiek, persoonlijke netwerken en de bredere maatschappij. Het programma kan u in bijlage onderaan dit bericht vinden.
