The Faculty of Arts of the University of Antwerp  is seeking to fill a full-time (100%) vacancy in the Department of History for a

Postdoctoral researcher in an ERC-funded project on historical future expectations in the Late Medieval and Early Modern Period

The candidate will be affiliated with the Centre for Urban History. The Centre for Urban History is an international acknowledged research centre focusing on urban societies, structures and processes in historical perspective. The candidate will contribute to the ERC Starting Grant Project “Back to the Future: Future expectations and actions in late medieval and early modern Europe, c.1400-c.1830” funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement no. 851053, https://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/225075/factsheet/en) and supervised by prof. dr. Jeroen Puttevils).

To gain more insight in how people in the past thought about the future and how this affected their actions, this project draws on a combination of close and distant reading methods of more than 15,000 letters written in (varieties of) Italian, German, French, Dutch and English by and to European merchants in the period 1400-1830.

The post-doctoral researcher will carry out the analysis of long-term developments in the linguistic expression and rhetoric of future statements on the basis of English merchant letters which cover the entire period and are mostly available in digital form. The researcher will use distant reading methods to find and categorize future statements within the English letters. Through close-reading particular letters (s)he will contextualize these future statements. The researcher will also assist and co-supervise the other team members, especially in the digital text analysis of the project.

Job description

• You contribute to research in the field of the late medieval and early modern future expectations in general and to the research goals of the project.
• You co-supervise PhD students and other team members and assist them in digital text analysis.
• You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment. These publications can be co-authored with other project members and external researchers.
• You are encouraged to apply for research funding, possibly in the role of (co-)supervisor.
• You manage the project website and the project’s presence on social media.
• You have a limited teaching responsibility in the History Department related to your own field of expertise and you contribute to research in the History Department and the Faculty of Arts.

Profile and requirements

• You hold (or get during the application period) a doctorate degree (PhD) in History, Historical Linguistics or Digital Humanities (with a strong historical component).
• You are fluent in academic English (speaking and writing).
• Command of additional languages that will be encountered in the project’s sources (Italian, Low & High German, Dutch and/or French merchant letters) is an important advantage.
• You have at least basic skills in text digitization, digital text analysis and text-mining and the willingness to improve these skills within a few months. Familiarity with coding and programming languages such as Python is commendable but not a strict requirement.
• You have experience in managing large amounts of historical sources and texts.
• Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
• The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.
• You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
• You have strong communication skills.

We offer

• an appointment as a postdoctoral researcher for a trial period of one year. After one year and positive assessment the contract can be renewed for an additional three years;
• the date of appointment is February 1, 2020;
• a full time gross monthly salary ranging from € 4.134,93 – € 6.446,00;

Utrecht University is looking for two Postdoctoral Researchers in the research project ‘The Multilingual Dynamics of the Literary Culture of Medieval Flanders, ca 1200 – ca 1500’. These two positions are part of a research project funded by the Netherlands Organisation of Scientific Research (NWO). This four-year project seeks to correct the traditional, monolingual view on Flemish literature between ca. 1200 and ca. 1500. It is the first large-scale investigation devoted to the literary culture of medieval Flanders from a multilingual perspective. A full description of the project can be read here. The project consists of three subprojects. Since December 1, 2018, a PhD candidate (4 years, 1.0 FTE) studies the literary dynamics resulting from the interaction between Middle Dutch and other languages in Flemish texts, Flemish multi-text manuscripts and booklists from medieval Flanders. From December 1, 2019, onwards, two Postdocs (each 3 years, 1.0 FTE) will carry out the remaining subprojects. Postdoc 1 will focus on Dutch, French and Latin texts that were written by authors in medieval Flanders and texts that were read in that region. Postdoc 2 will study manuscripts containing Dutch, French and Latin texts that scribes produced in medieval Flanders and the manuscripts that circulated in that region. In the deepening and synthesising stages of the project, the findings of the two Postdoc subprojects will be combined.

Tasks
Each of the two Postdocs will be asked to:

• set up a data collection of texts or manuscripts whose production and/or reception can be assigned to medieval Flanders
• apply various theoretical perspectives to the dataset
• write two international conference papers
• contribute to the organization of the project’s final conference
• co-author and co-edit the conference proceedings
• contribute to teaching (f.e. tutorials for Research Master students)
• contribute to the exhibition that is part of the project
• write a popularizing essay
• deliver a public lecture

1. Een positie van doctoraatsbursaal gefinancierd door een GOA-project (geconcerteerde onderzoeksactie, toegekend door het Bijzonder Onderzoeksfonds van de UGent) High Tide – Low Tide. Bruges’ late-medieval harbour system as a maritime cultural landscape (promotoren Wim De Clercq, archeologie, Stephen Louweye, geologie en Jan Dumolyn).

U onderzoekt het historisch luik in een interdisciplinair project met betrekking tot de vorming van het commerciële landschap in het middeleeuwse Zwin-landschap en de handelsmetropool Brugge. Uw onderzoek is specifiek gericht op de import van bulkgoederen in middeleeuws Vlaanderen, ten behoeve van de artisanale industrie en de voedselvoorziening van de stedelijke bevolking.

U hebt een goede kennis van paleografie, middeleeuwse archiefdocumenten, Middelnederlands, Middelfrans en Middeleeuws Latijn (het is zinloos te kandideren indien u niet vooraf over deze technische capaciteiten beschikt, of deze op zeer korte termijn kan bijspijkeren). Daarnaast beschikt u over de nodige onderzoekscapaciteiten, beheerst u het Engels uitstekend en hebt u een minstens passieve kennis van het hedendaags Frans en Duits.

U bent bereid periodes door te brengen in buitenlandse archieven en binnen een interdisciplinair team te functioneren.

2. Een positie van doctoraatsbursaal gefinancierd door een project van het FWO-Vlaanderen Litigation strategies and the law of commerce in later medieval Bruges (Co-promotor Dave De ruysscher, VUB) Het betreft een dubbeldoctoraat aan de UGent (de hoofdinstelling waar u het meest tijd zal doorbrengen) en de VUB.

U onderzoekt het laatmiddeleeuwse handelsrecht in Brugge. U zal zich bekwamen in de zowel bronnen van de stedelijke als van de vorstelijke rechtspraak. U ontwikkelt zich tegelijk als economisch historicus/a (onder begeleiding van Jan Dumolyn) en rechtshistoricus/a (onder begeleiding van Dave De ruysscher en Dirk Heirbaut).

U hebt een goede kennis van paleografie, middeleeuwse archiefdocumenten, Middelnederlands, Middelfrans en Middeleeuws Latijn (het is zinloos te kandideren indien u niet vooraf over deze technische capaciteiten beschikt, of deze op zeer korte termijn kan bijspijkeren). In het kader van het NWO Vrije Competitie project The Multilingual Dynamics of the Literary Culture of Medieval Flanders (ca 1200 – ca 1500) is bij het onderzoeksinstituut Instituut voor Cultuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek (ICON) plaats voor een Assistent-In-Opleiding (AIO) oftewel PhD-student Middelnederlandse literatuur.

Onderzoeksprogramma

Dit project richt zich op het meertalige karakter van de literaire cultuur van middeleeuws Vlaanderen. Het zoekt antwoord op de vraag hoe Nederlandse, Franse en Latijnse eentalige en meertalige teksten in deze regio functioneerden en interacteerden tussen ca. 1200 en ca. 1500. Het project is georganiseerd in drie deelprojecten. Twee Postdocs richten zich op de Franse, Nederlandse en Latijnse teksten en handschriften die in Vlaanderen werden geschreven, geproduceerd en gerecipieerd. Het derde deelproject, uitgevoerd door de AIO die we nu zoeken, onderzoekt meertalige teksten en codices waarin Nederlands voorkomt. De volledige vacature kan u hier raadplegen. De Faculteit Letteren van de Radboud Universiteit (Nijmegen) is op zoek naar een promovendus voor het project ‘Christine Mohrmann en de (katholieke) klassiekenreceptie’.

In dit vierjarige onderzoeksproject staat de persoon van classica Christine Mohrmann (1903-1988) centraal. Doel van dit wetenschappelijk onderzoek is het analyseren en beschrijven van het leven van Mohrmann tegen de achtergrond van de positie van vrouwelijke wetenschappers binnen de academische cultuur als geheel en het netwerk van classici in het bijzonder, de veranderlijke status van de studie der klassieken gedurende de twintigste eeuw en de wisselwerking van het vak met de veranderingen binnen het Nederlandse en internationale katholicisme.

Als promovendus analyseert u het nagelaten archief van Mohrmann, alsmede dat van de Radboud Universiteit en andere (katholieke) organisaties waarbinnen Mohrmann actief was. Tevens analyseert u de inhoud van haar vakpublicaties en de ontvangst daarvan in nationale en internationale vaktijdschriften en netwerken van classici, historici en theologen. U schrijft hierover een proefschrift dat zich tevens leent om te worden uitgegeven als lezenswaardige en toegankelijke Nederlandstalige biografie die het honderdjarig bestaan van de Radboud Universiteit in 2023 luister bijzet. Het onderzoeksproject kent derhalve een strikte deadline. Uw onderzoek ressorteert deels onder de afdeling Geschiedenis (i.h.b. cultuurgeschiedenis) en deels onder Algemene Cultuurwetenschappen (i.h.b. receptiegeschiedenis).
