The Role
Applications are invited for a 1-year post-doctoral fellowship in Low Countries History. The appointee will undertake a major survey of the holdings on Low Countries history in the Wohl Library of the Institute of Historical Research, and of other Low Countries materials other institutes and libraries in the School of Advanced Study with the aim of promoting and facilitating their use and identifying resources for digitisation.
A key aspect of the role will be to identify potential funding opportunities for development of these library collections, and to manage the process of grant applications. In addition, the appointee will engage in the promotion of the collections by attending appropriate events, using social media and visiting relevant history departments.

NEW: The Medieval Low Countries
The Medieval Low Countries. An Annual Review is a new peer-reviewed journal featuring articles on the Low Countries (viewed in its broadest sense as the estuaries of Scheldt, Meuse, Rhine and IJssel with their corresponding hinterlands), from the start of the fifth to the second half of the sixteenth century. During these centuries this was one of the major centers of economic, cultural, religious and social creativity in Europe. By publishing the best of new scholarship concerning the region over the course of the Middle Ages, The Medieval Low Countries will make these achievements more fully visible and help display the connections between changes in each domain. At the same time, the journal will provide a forum for exchange and cooperation between both established and upcoming scholars in several disciplines, whether in Europe, the United States, or beyond.
The MLC will be published as a single volume, once a year. The editors will consider submissions from a wide range of disciplines (history, law, religion, art, architecture, literature, etc.). Articles that have an interdisciplinary or comparative scope and are carefully situated in the literature from relevant disciplines are especially welcome, whether in the form of an article presenting new research, a review essay or a short text edition. The journal will also include relevant book reviews. The articles will be in English or French.

Ruusbroec encounters… Instituut voor Joodse Studies: Tussen Christelijke Vroomheid en Joodse Geleerdheid: de werelden van Johannes Campensis (c. 1491-1538)
In 2015 organiseert het Ruusbroecgenootschap een reeks activiteiten om haar negentigjarig bestaan als onderzoeksinstituut te vieren: Ruusbroec Encounters. Voor elk van deze activiteiten ging het Ruusbroecgenootschap een partnerschap aan met een ander onderzoeksinstituut van binnen of buiten de Universiteit Antwerpen. Samen gingen ze op zoek naar raakvlakken tussen hun onderzoeksgebieden. Op 26 maart 2015 vindt de eerste ‘Ruusbroec Encounter’ plaats in samenwerking met het Instituut voor Joodse Studies.
Bewonderd door Erasmus, gedrukt door Dirk Martens, geschoold in het Grieks, Hebreeuws en Latijn aan het drietalencollege te Leuven waar hij zelf van 1521 tot 1531 Hebreeuws zou doceren: de hebraïcus en priester Johannes Campensis (c. 1491-1538) behoort tot de meest vooraanstaande Nederlandse Renaissance humanisten. Ondanks zijn internationaal vermaarde werk is Campensis bij lange na niet de aandacht ten deel gevallen die hij verdient. Daarom zullen August den Hollander en Theodor Dunkelgrün in een tweespraak hernieuwde aandacht vragen voor de geleerde wereld van Campensis. Bijzondere aandacht zal uitgaan naar de raakvlakken tussen Christelijke vroomheid en Joodse geleerdheid, en naar de geschiedenis van het Hebreeuwse boek – en van het uit het Hebreeuwse vertaalde boek – in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden tijdens de zestiende eeuw.
Deze eerste ‘Ruusbroec Encounter’ vindt plaats in Het Prentenkabinet in het Hof van Liere (Stadscampus Universiteit Antwerpen). Het programma vangt aan om 20u. Napraten kan achteraf tijdens de receptie.

Colloquium ‘The Merchant and the Law: Mind the Gap?’
Op 30 en 31 maart vindt in Maastricht het colloquium The Merchant and the Law: Mind the Gap? plaats.
“For present-day legal historians, the historical development of commercial law in early modern Europe is characterized by the definitive breakthrough of top-down legislation (royal ordinances, urban statutes, etc.) as the formal source of law par excellence. Thus far, the accretion of such legislative efforts in the early modern period has always been portrayed in a causal relationship with the lingering demise of custom as the most pre-eminent source of law in Europe, and consequently, also as the dynamic force behind every modification of private and commercial law.
Within the field of economic history, however, a different narrative is predominating. Here, changes in the organisation of trade, as well as commercial law, are primarily attributed to merchants as customarily operating actors within the world of European commerce. As such, the historical development of commercial law implies a bottom-up operation in the first place, whereby the dynamic usages and practices of merchants continued to function as the fundamental source of law, despite the growing number of legislative activities of local and central authorities.
Both interpretations not only seem to take for granted the existence of a gap between the merchant and the law; they also give proof of a well-maintained and structural lack of interdisciplinary cooperation between both fields of research. Therefore, the colloquium aspires to build bridges. It seeks to promote interdisciplinary cooperation between economic and legal historians. Likewise, and by means of dialogue and debate, the colloquium seeks to assess the actual significance of customary practices of merchants on the one hand and legislative efforts of local and central authorities on the other hand within the historical development process of early modern commercial law in a more nuanced manner.”

Call for proposals: The Changing Face of Medieval Dutch Narrative Literature in the Early Period of Print
De tweede expert meeting van het onderzoeksproject The Changing Face of Medieval Dutch Narrative Literature in the Early Period of Print vindt plaats op 26 en 27 november 2015 in Antwerpen. In het bijgevoegde document vindt u de Call for proposals van deze meeting. Deadline voor het insturen is 15 maart 2015.

Op 6 februari a.s. zal dr. Hugo van der Velden benoemd worden tot Rijksmuseumhoogleraar Kunstgeschiedenis van de Middeleeuwen, in het bijzonder van de Lage Landen, aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De lezing is getiteld: Bruegels grauw. Het beeld als historische bron.

Derde Dag van de Medioneerlandistiek
Uitnodiging voor de Derde Dag van de Medioneerlandistiek
Na Antwerpen in 2012 en Utrecht in 2013 heeft de sectie historische Nederlandse Letterkunde van de UGent de eer om de Derde Dag van de Medioneerlandistiek te organiseren. Deze Derde Dag, die zal plaatsvinden op vrijdag 22 mei 2015, bestaat uit twee luiken. De voormiddag is gewijd aan gedachtewisselingen met Paul Wackers (UU), Frank Willaert (UA), Frits van Oostrom (UU) en Thom Mertens (UA) over de toekomst van de medioneerlandistiek, en de studie van de historische Nederlandse letterkunde in het algemeen. In de namiddag hebben de deelnemers de keuze uit vier gegidste wandelingen in Gent. Ter gelegenheid van deze Derde Dag willen we een brochure samenstellen waarin elke geïnteresseerde de mogelijkheid krijgt zijn/haar huidig onderzoeks- of onderwijsproject voor te stellen. Op die manier willen we op de hoogte blijven van elkaars werkzaamheden en een staalkaart bieden van wat tegenwoordig in de medioneerlandistiek leeft. Eveneens hopen we dat het uitwisselen van die informatie toekomstige (samenwerkings)initiatieven in ons vakgebied kan bevorderen. De brochure zal op de Derde Dag zelf worden voorgesteld en uitgedeeld.
Concreet vragen we degene die aan deze brochure wil meewerken een formulier in te vullen. Dit document kan verkregen worden door een mail te sturen naar ine.kiekens@ugent.be. Let op dat alle inzendingen voor de brochure voor 9 februari a.s. binnen moeten zijn.
