Call for papers: Historical discourses on languages and power

We are pleased to announce that the next Historical Sociolinguistics Network (HiSoN) conference will take place on 6-8 February 2014 at the University of Sheffield. Bordering the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, Sheffield is easily reached via Manchester International Airport as well as London airports.

Keynote speakers:

  • Anita Auer (Universiteit Utrecht) – http://www.hum.uu.nl/medewerkers/a.auer/
  • Nils Langer (University of Bristol) – http://www.bris.ac.uk/sml/people/nils-langer/index.html
  • Phil Withington (University of Sheffield) – http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/history/staff/phil-withington

Description:

This conference aims to zone in on the interface between history and linguistics, with a sharp focus on historical discourses on language and power. Power plays a central role in shaping social interactions and various forms of group membership. It enables the construction of insiders and outsiders in relation to ethnicity, social class, gender, religion and so on. From a historical perspective, in what ways has language been central to constructing, challenging and reconfiguring boundaries? Additionally, in what ways do contemporary discourses on language and power draw on historical events to justify or contest social practices? Contributions are welcome from but not limited to the fields of sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, social history and cultural anthropology.

The deadline for abstracts of 250-300 words (bibliography included) is 31 August 2013. Abstracts and queries about the conference should to be sent to the conference email address: hisonsheffield@gmail.com. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 31 October 2013.

Further information will be posted to the conference website in due course. Please watch this space: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/english/hison

We look forward to seeing you in February 2014,

Call for posters: ‘Verloren glans.

  • Archeologische collecties vensterglas in Noordwest-Europa

Call for poster sessions proposals

Are you involved in an interesting project or in an area of work that you would like to discuss with or show to other congress attendees? Why not present your work in one of the two poster sessions at the ‘Lost Luster’ congress of the Abbey museum Ten Duinen 1138? This is an ideal opportunity to present your work in an international conference and to be exposed to the most recent developments in the research on archaeological window glass.

We are pleased to invite you to submit your proposal in one of the two following poster sessions:

1. October 3rd, 2013 –“Archaeological collections of window glass and applied scientific research”.

2. October 4th, 2013 – “Production, exchange and social value of window glass between the 10th and 18th c.”

Call for papers: Real estate and social topography (1100-1800)

Session at the European Social Science and History Conference (ESSHC) Vienna, 23-26 April 2014

  • Title: Real Estate and Social Topography in pre-modern urban Europe (1100-1800)
  • Session organizers: Heidi Deneweth (VUB), Brecht Dewilde (KU Leuven), Bram Vannieuwenhuyze (KU Leuven)
  • Chair: to be confirmed
  • Discussant: to be confirmed
  • Abstracts: 30 April 2013

This session will bring together social, economic and urban historians to present current research on the interaction between real estate, the housing market and social topography in pre-modern European cities and towns. Periods of economic and demographic growth as well as periods of urban decline have a direct impact on urban development, town planning, building activities, real estate and rental markets, and social topography. Equally interesting are periods of gradual economic change affecting the attractiveness of cities to migrants on the one hand and the living standards of the population on the other hand. The resulting processes of geographic and social mobility often cause important shifts between the markets for real estate and rental housing. These shifts can result in divergent price evolutions on both markets and hence influence the investment patterns of the wealthier groups as well. New priorities for investments on the housing market might lead to the redevelopment of existing plots in order to provide housing better adapted to the changing demand.

This session aims to investigate the impact of growth and decline as well as of gradual economic change on the housing market and social topography of pre-modern towns. Papers may deal with the following themes (or any combination of them):

  • Price formation and evolution on real estate and rental markets
  • Ownership structures, investment patterns and social mobility/inequality
  • Social topography, housing typologies, segregation patterns.
  • Large- or small-scale urban developments and planning

We especially welcome papers focusing on the interactions between urban and social transformations in a comparative and/or longitudinal perspective. We hope to include papers dealing with cities and towns from different countries/regions in Europe in any period between the twelfth and late eighteenth century.

Practical details

Abstracts of up to 500 words, including title, name, affiliation and contact details should be submitted before April 30th 2013 to Heidi Deneweth (heidi.deneweth@vub.ac.be) and should indicate how the content of the paper addresses the session theme outlined above. Accepted papers will be sent, together with this session proposal, to the organizers of the European Social Science and History Conference (Vienna, 23-26 April 2014).
